【摘要】:1.1Thistestmethodcoversthedeterminationofplane-strain(chevron-notch)fracturetoughnesses,KIvorKIvM,ofmetallicmaterials.Fracturetoughnessbythismethodisrelativetoaslowlyadvancingsteadystatecrackinitiatedatachevron-shapednotch,andpropagatinginachevron-shapedligament(Fig.1).Somemetallicmaterials,whentestedbythismethod,exhibitasporadiccrackgrowthinwhichthecrackfrontremainsnearlystationaryuntilacriticalloadisreached.Thecrackthenbecomesunstableandsuddenlyadvancesathighspeedtothenextarrestpoint.Forthesematerials,thistestmethodcoversthedeterminationoftheplane-strainfracturetoughness,KIvjorKIvM,relativetothecrackatthepointsofinstability.Note18212;OnedifferencebetweenthistestmethodandTestMethodE399(whichmeasuresKIc)isthatTestMethodE399centersattentiononthestartofcrackextensionfromafatigueprecrack.Thistestmethodmakesuseofeitherasteadystateslowlypropagatingcrack,oracrackattheinitiationofacrackjump.Althoughbothmethodsarebasedontheprinciplesoflinearelasticfracturemechanics,thisdifference,plusotherdifferencesintestprocedure,maycausethevaluesfromthistestmethodtobelargerthanKIcvaluesinsomematerials.Therefore,toughnessvaluesdeterminedbythistestmethodcannotbeusedinterchangeablywithKIc.1.2Thistestmethoduseseitherchevron-notchedrodspecimensofcircularcrosssection,orchevron-notchedbarspecimensofsquareorrectangularcrosssection(Figs.1-10).Theterms"shortrod"and"shortbar"areusedcommonlyforthesetypesofchevron-notchedspecimens.1.3Thisstandarddoesnotpurporttoaddressallofthesafetyconcerns,ifany,associatedwithitsuse.Itistheresponsibilityoftheuserofthisstandardtoestablishappropriatesafetyandhealthpracticesanddeterminetheapplicabilityofregulatorylimitationspriortouse.
